Support is a moment of pure potential.” –Celine Condorelli, ‘Exergue’‘PLACEHOLDERS’ is a series of work that explores how objects provide support, both in space and in thought, becoming a scaffold upon which meaning is built. In this particular configuration, the objects themselves hold place, sometimes alone, sometimes in groups, sometimes in support of things, and other times not. The repetitive nature of the PLACEHOLDERS’ form shifts slightly to accommodate different contexts, each with a different set of requirements. This implies a sort of resilience and adaptability, however in actual fact they are rigid and uncompromising, which asks more of the object being supported to be adaptable. Capturing this moment of pure potential between two otherwise disparate objects, and holding it indefinitely, challenges our notions of what is more important: the thing…or the thing that supports the thing? One without the other would not be able to reach it’s full potential, as most things in life become established through similar acts of support and tension. We humans are especially a product of various systems of support, that in different ways have either held us up or failed to do so, asking for that support to manifest elsewhere, or for us to become the support itself. From these synthetic pixel compositions, meaning emerges. An individual recognizes pattern, depicting one of many possible configured realities. ‘Pattern Recognition’ is a series of work that explores the transformative effects of translating flat, 2-dimensional patterns into objects that also hold meaning and can transform 3-dimensional space. The patterns are initially hand generated in computer space, the emergent forms based loosely on the need to create distinction and meaning out of a meaningless single pixel unit. Sometimes there is reference to man made architecture and form, other times letters and alphabet, as well as human figures: ‘human things’. The process itself seeks to create a visual language by stringing together singular elements like those of an ‘alphabet’, where then meaning begins to emerge through the recognition of image. However, beyond the creator’s (mine) own logic, meaning also emerges through interaction with the ‘other’, the ‘viewer’, who in their own moment of encounter begin to seek out and recognise their own patterns. &nbsp;&nbsp; The nature of the single unit pixel, as a synthetic element that once strung together within a coded composition depicting ‘reality’, is something we share with machines. We construct and render imagery that in their single units of color and form are meaningless until they become compositions representative of something meaningful, made either to carry out a function (computer) or communicate a narrative (human). &nbsp; The nature of the design is that you can play with both the amount of negative and positive space. The reflective nature of the acrylic absorbs and refracts light, while the engraved inner pattern floats above, offering a spatial dimension. The work is made of laser cut and engraved black acrylic tiles, held together with a light mesh cloth and plastic welding adhesive so as to create a soft but stiff piece. This also allows for it to be hung in space and becomes more fluid. It is best mounted to a wall. To distance oneself from our notion of ‘self’ and gaze into the ‘other’, seeing reality as one that exists parallel to many; that truth is plural and perception full of blind spots.In the human eye there is a small patch on the back retina that is devoid of rods and cones. This condition causes a small blindness in vision that is compensated by the other eye and by the brain’s ability to “fill in holes.” “Blind spot” has become shorthand for other inabilities in perception, gaps which we know about, but still can not perceive. Daniel Daam–Rossi’s project explores the “blind spot” phenomena as it occurs between people: we know that other people perceive and experience the world differently then we experience it ourselves, but we can never experience it exactly as they do. Much of art aims to bridge this gap, trying to provide insight into an individual’s experience; much of it says, “This is how I experienced the world and maybe in seeing, or smelling, or touching, or hearing, you will have a similar experience and you will know what it is like to be me for a moment.” But for Daam–Rossi, ‘Blind Spot’ is not about the artist’s experience of the world. Instead of exploring subjective experience, it explores the very subjectiveness of experience. It shines a light on the darkness between us, and on the distance and challenge of empathy. The project is a process. Moving from the south end of the building (next to the gallery entrance), it explores the Self, moves out toward Separation to Transition, and finally ends with the Other. Each step is an experiment in reflecting on what we know about ourselves and others. discussion between the studios Radical Norms and Department of Unusual Certainties, with the aim of furthering the public conversation surrounding privacy in this digital age. Our first event was a panel discussion held during the 2017 Toronto Design Offsite Festival, exploring the designer’s role in addressing digital privacy. The cross-industry discussion panel, in conversation with the audience, explored different topics and perspectives around the implications of privacy, including current methods of maintaining privacy, what privacy means to individuals, groups and in business, how the landscapes of design and digital technology are changing policy and what the future of privacy might look like. Through this conversation, and our panelists’ industry specific examples, a framework of privacy considerations emerged. This exchange occurs within a larger context of implicit choices around digital privacy by all involved. It takes the form of a kiosk hosting quick, lighthearted and accessible activities for the public to engage with in order to make tangible the transfer of information that happens in a digital exchange. Through this project, our goal is to encourage discussion around privacy in the digital landscape through a memorable experience for the participants. Through this discussion we have collected, and continue to collect, feedback around the structure of the framework and data on behavioural patterns of exchange. The panelBrandon Kerstens – Commercial Lawyer specialising in marketing &amp; distribution and privacy &amp; data management.Pia Nyakairu – Human Factors/UX/UI Designer in the Healthcare FieldRob H Wood – Security consultant specialising in product security for embedded devices with NCC GroupRita Morais – PhD Candidate (ABD) in the Department of Communication and Culture at Ryerson UniversityAshley Casovan – Canada’s Open Government Portal lead One question posed to the panel was ‘can a universal code of conduct be created, when designers are faced with moral or ethical decisions regarding privacy in their work?’ It quickly became apparent that such universal code, although ideal, would not be possible. Simply put, the discussions surrounding ‘privacy’ are much richer and more nuanced than can be summarised by a general code of conduct. In fact, given the diverse backgrounds of the panelists, each viewing privacy from a different lense, it can be said that it isn’t about simplification, but rather enhancing methods and modes of communication in order to bridge the gap of complexity and to facilitate transparency and understanding, not only between professionals but throughout all of society. In this respect, the designer plays a crucial role as mediator, creator and communicator between the various ‘privacy motivated’ stakeholders. So far the main themes we have identified and will explore are: Regulation, Consent, Value, and Consequences of Data Exchange. We recognise the complexity of this topic and therefore have taken to diving deeper into the subject. Currently, we are collaboratively exploring various ways to extract the knowledge that has begun to emerge from the discussion and apply the many notions and ideas into more tangible outputs, and in our real-life context. In other words, a future when we will be able to store our actual memories in the ‘cloud’, granting the possibility for others to access a detailed digital version of our ‘physical’ selves. This idea was born out of speculating the future of caring for patients with dementia, and how a person’s self could be preserved or better yet, understood by caregivers when being given treatment. We piggy backed on concepts like ‘singularity’, the idea stating that man and machine will eventually become one, opening up the possibility to download or upload one’s consciousness to machine based entities in order to surpass the limited lifespan and capacity of the human body as we know it. It seems far-fetched, but we can already see traces with how we build our social media profiles and construct the pieces of our digital selves, accessible by others, albeit using ‘simpler’ technologies. <img width="750" height="1000" width_o="750" height_o="1000" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/777fe5160150289570225b2c98bad5439da9e02c6bf9bf3e0fb28096be967887/memory-cloud-apparatus_008.jpg" data-mid="12585959" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/750/i/777fe5160150289570225b2c98bad5439da9e02c6bf9bf3e0fb28096be967887/memory-cloud-apparatus_008.jpg" /> An Experience Overview On the 20th of January, 2017, two groups of 10 people were taken on a journey into the ‘future’. It began with each group sitting in a circle in a multi-purpose sculpture studio, located at the back of an old school building. At the center of the circle, a single spotlight shone from above, lighting a speaker box playing Brian Eno’s ‘Airplane Music’; a very soothing, slow, meditative and repetitive song. Participants would slowly trickle in, taking their seats around the circle that once each person was settled would become the site for a time travel exercise. The music would switch over to become a narrator’s voice; their guide on a journey into the future, transporting each participant to a place far from the room they had originally stepped in, and closer to a projected future. This narrated journey would become the scaffolding upon which each individual’s imagination would construct and fill in the specific details of what would become their own ‘future memory’. The main encounter in this memory would be with a Memory Cloud Apparatus: the interface device used to access a person’s memories, a medium between the real and the digital. The narration would last roughly 8 minutes when the narrator would welcome the participants back to the present, directing them to an adjacent room where an actual version of the Memory Cloud Apparatus stood, physically. The physicality of the Memory Cloud Apparatus became almost like the confirmation of what had just transpired. An object forcing confrontation with the experience itself, allowing one to dive into another’s memories. After each participant had the chance to experience the Memory Cloud Apparatus, they were brought to another connecting room. This would be the final stage of the workshop where each traveler would take the time to map the memory that was created in the narrated experience. Beginning from the more personal to eventually being asked to consider more broad societal issues, each individual would have their own individual ‘future memory map’. Some would find it difficult, others not, given the diversity of the audience. Understanding and placing what had just come to pass, being a future both far and close to their present reality, was a task built on a very personal experience of the future, but that had been created collectively. So come time to have a discussion regarding each person’s thoughts and feelings on the experience, many different sentiments would emerge. Rumsfeld, coined as the ‘known, knowns’ in order to explore the ‘unknown, unknowns’ with the least amount of inertia. The narrative structure provides the platform to imagine and project oneself into spaces that may not yet exist, acting as a scaffolding upon which meaning is built. Although all participants are brought through the same narrated experience, each individual creates an individual interpretation of that environment, building and projecting meaning that stems from a very personal accumulation of knowledge and experience. This results in the emergence of very individual nuances of truth and reality. The experience therefore becomes believable because it is a self made construct. Once people are immersed, feel, and negotiate these ‘future-based, but present-oriented’ experiences, a more concrete relationship to otherwise abstract notions becomes established.
